“Youth are the Nation of Tomorrow”
1. Introduction
Education is an important tool for the development of both individuals and the nation as a whole. Through education, young people acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies that enable them to participate in various economic and social activities. Universities play a key role in preparing youth for the labor market as well as equipping them with entrepreneurial skills for self-employment.
However, in recent years there has been a challenge of unemployment among many university graduates. As a result, some young people are forced to engage in self-employment activities in order to earn a living. Despite these efforts, there is still an ongoing debate on whether formal education adequately equips graduates with sufficient skills to start and manage self-employment activities.
Some believe that university education develops creativity and enables graduates to initiate their own projects. However, others argue that such education is largely theoretical rather than practical, making it difficult for many graduates to effectively apply their knowledge in self-employment.
Therefore, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of formal education in enabling youth to become self-employed after graduating from universities.
2. Statement of the Problem
Every year, universities produce a large number of graduates who are expected to enter the formal job market. However, available job opportunities have remained limited compared to the number of graduates. This situation has led many educated youths to remain unemployed and turn to self-employment.
Despite these efforts, there are still questions regarding the extent to which formal education supports them in establishing and managing their self-employment activities. Some graduates are found engaging in activities that are not related to their field of study.
Therefore, it is important to conduct a study to determine whether formal education provided in universities is effective in enabling youth to become self-employed or whether there are gaps that need to be addressed in the education system.
3. General Objective of the Study
To examine the effectiveness of formal education in enabling youth to become self-employed after graduating from university.
4. Specific Objectives
- To examine the extent to which university graduates engage in self-employment.
- To determine whether the self-employment activities are related to their field of study.
- To examine how the education obtained in university helps them in self-employment activities.
- To identify challenges that prevent youth from applying their education in self-employment.
5. Significance of the Study
This study will be important in the following ways:
- It will help in understanding the role of university education in enabling youth to become self-employed.
- It will provide recommendations to universities on how to improve curricula to equip students with self-employment skills.
- It will assist the government and development stakeholders in designing strategies for youth economic empowerment.
- It will help young people understand how to effectively use their education in self-employment.
9. Conclusion
This study is expected to provide deeper insights into the effectiveness of formal education in enabling youth to become self-employed after university graduation. The findings may help improve the education system so that it equips students with practical skills and knowledge for economic independence through self-employment activities.
